A Mixed Bag Of Blessings
I’m a great believer in keeping things simple. One camera, one lens at a time.
Obviously, not all of the kit shown fits in the bag at the same time, but the Nikon D90 and 18-200mm does, on its own, and the Leica and Olympus do, together.
My preference is black and white film with the Leica and a 35mm Summicron. The Olympus OM 2 with its 50mm and 28mm lenses are a nice backup, or for when I want something longer or wider than a 35mm lens, which isn’t often.
The Nikon D90 I use for colour – with the 18-200mm zoom this combination covers everything I need and more. I’m trying to find time to use it more, as I want to develop my ‘colour eye’. After so long using black and white I still ‘see’ monochrome better.
The Olympus XA (another genius design from Maitani!) now doesn’t get a lot of use as its shutter is a trifle delicate, probably caused by being hiked about the country in a rucksac in all weather. A cracking film camera to pop in a pocket as a point-and-shoot.
My present kit comprises:
1 Altoids Small Tin
A self-made card holder for my SD cards (see my post ‘Altoids Tin SD Card Holder’)
2 Lithium 2L76 3v Battery
Spare battery that fits both the Leica M6 TTL and the Olympus OM 2
3 Black Rapid Classic RS-4
Bought it via their website when they weren’t readily available in the UK. A great strap for the Nikon D90 and 18-200mm – hardly know I’m carrying it. Recommended highly for a heavy camera and lens
4 Nikon D90 with a 18-200mm DX VRII lens
For colour work
5 Olympus OM 2 with 50mm f1.4 Zuiko
Shown with a leather wrist strap
6 28mm f2.8 Zuiko
Great wide angle lens
7 Olympus XA with A11 Flash
Starting to show its age (bought it in 1979) but it’s a longtime favourite
8 Leica M6 TTL Black Paint with 35mm Summicron Asph Black Paint
Known as the ‘Millennium’ – shown with a Heliopan yellow SH-PMC filter and Leica’s standard camera strap
9 Cheap Notebook & propelling Pencil
Nothing fancy, just something practical and light
10 B+W 39mm F-Pro UV MRC filter
For the Summicron
11 35mm Black & White Film
Currently mostly using Fomapan 200 Creative but others get a look in now and again
12 Domke F-5XB Rugged Wear Bag
This suits me just fine – not too big, not too heavy, does what it says on the tin
